MOS installed several FBG sensors in the Como Cathedral in Como, Italy. The Cathedral is subject to flooding and subsidence due to the presence of Lake Como, and also adverse vibrations due to traffic. The sensors installed include FBG strain sensors, FBG crack metres, and movement monitoring between some of the building's piers.

FBG Building Monitoring Applications
FBGs can be used to monitor for changes in strain and relative movements of buildings in a similar manner to how they can monitor bridges. Concrete buildings can be monitored using long-gauge strain sensors or for relative movements, and steel frames can be monitored using FBGs that can be attached to their surface. A case where MOS monitored a building for movement is listed below.
