Continuous Monitoring with Optical Sensors

MOS provide fibre-optic based structural health monitoring solutions, typically using Fibre Bragg Gratings (FBGs) for measurments. FBGs can be used to measure changes in strain, temperature, acceleration, pressure, displacement and humidity, to name a few. These sensors can be applied to in a number of ways to different infrastructure, depending on the monitoring requirements.

Bridges


FBG Sensors can be used to measure strain in bridge elements or changes in distances between bridge components.

Highways and Airport Runways


FBG sensor cables are well suited for either direct embedment or retrofitting of pavements for strain monitoring and vehicle detection.

Buildings


FBG Sensors can be used to monitor for movements and strains within buildings that are subject to movements caused by outside factors.

Retaining Walls and Embankments


FBG Sensors can be embedded into the framework or retrofitted into a retaining wall, and can be used to monitor for slope stability of embankments.

Tunnels


FBG Sensor cables can be directly embedded into the sprayed concrete lining of a new tunnel and retrofitted into a tunnel's wall to monitor for movement and stress.

Rail


FBG Sensors are well suited to monitor rail as there is no risk of signal leakage and can provide more detailed information than a full Wheatstone Bridge Arrangement.
